Frequently I am asked when I visit salon and spas “How did you do it? How did you make your business a success?”

The truth is it wasn’t luck or being in the right place at the right time.
It was hard work, consistency, and delivering quality treatments -bringing a distinguished experience to the customer.

I do believe however that there many surefire ways to guarantee your salon or spa’s success, and these 3  tips are yours to follow :

Learn to not be a salesperson.

Don’t have a goal of “I’m going to sell this, I’m going to sell that. I must make this (X) amount of money today.”
Apart from being harsh this is setting yourself up for a fall.

The saying goes “People don’t buy what you sell, they buy why you sell it.” 

Your clients won’t buy from you unless they believe in the benefits. No client cares about your machines or which celebrity endorses your treatments or skin. They care about their beauty problems and what you can offer to solve them. Find or figure out what she wants to achieve. Match this directly to what you have to solve their problem.

Believe in what you are doing to be able to conquer all this with confidence. Pick products and treatments that go with your unique beauty ethos to make all of the above simple.

Fall in love with social media.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snapchat, WhatsApp and many more can be utilised everyday to keep your brand name and image at the forefront.
If you have an event coming up advertise this on them all on the run up, and if your budget allows do a paid ad to really target your niche audience. It’s inexpensive and a good return on investment.

Everyone wants the spa bling and products to satisfy beauty junkies or demanding client, right from the off.
Often this is not possible to due to monetary constraints. Aspirations and wanting to have everything perfect is admirably ambitious, but can lead to frustration during the beginnings of your empire.
If we truly dig into what growing an authentic and successful business is all about for both you and your clients, it’s actually best to start small.
Apart from being less risk due to not having to borrow money, it’s a great way to do your market research as you are growing and expanding. Learn what your clients want as you go along! If you start too big you run the risk of spending humongous amounts of money on basically fluff and stuff your clientele aren’t interested in.

Always over deliver, it’s your best free investment.

Get to know your clients on a personal level and find out their wants and needs. Once you start employing staff, to an extent you will miss out on this. By starting humbly and small you can physically perform everything yourself, and perfectly, and enjoy the ride at the same time!

Choose positive and powerful thoughts for yourself everyday at work to help you clearly invisage the future – with all of your lovely clients in it! It will happen.

If you have absolutely no income, or no means of starting your business, you can still do this!

Start your business in a spare bedroom with one machine or product line. Consider a pop-up business, where you can rent daily space in a hairdressers, bridal store, holistic office such as a chiropractors, etc. To keep overheads down offer the owner and their families treatments in return for rent, or pay a minimal amount if you can get new people through their door.

Or get online and start a beauty business,

Look at the many ways to make money as a blogger, influencer, collaborator, at the same time making a name for yourself out there as an expert in your field. Many start-up websites are totally free. One last cherry on the tree.

Less bureaucracy, paperwork and red tape is definitely another bonus of starting small. The bigger you grow, the more of this you will have to attend to. Enjoy the freedom of small beginnings.

    I agree with you at many points. People will definitely will like to buy from someone who wants to serve them from his heart, not someone who just wants to sell. Also, social media is very important nowadays for all kinds of business.

    I agree with you on the point that people want to buy from someone who is willing to meet their needs not someone who just wants to sell them and make profits. I have a lot of salons active on social media and I think that photos help a lot with the marketing, and also content not directly related to sales.

We talked about letting the service speak for itself, and her clients would become her best team of salespeople 🙂

    1. Thank you. Depending on what she is qualified in, or what her niche is she could go mobile and lightweight to begin with. A pop -up business day would require either a portable chair or bed, a folding table and a signage of some sort. Lighting, mirrors, privacy screening, etc would all need to be discussed with the joint business for the day.
